Tell us about your career:
As a young lawyer, I was given the opportunity to help a commercial property manager remove a business from a small business suite in Midtown Charlotte. That PM was friends with the Chairwoman of the Membership Committee of the then "Charlotte" Apartment Association. When the Chairwoman needed help with a complicated tenant situation (a resident was discovered to be on the sex offender registry), the PM recommended me, and once I was able to help them resolve that situation, I was invited by her to join the CAA. And because of that introduction, I have been a member of the CAA/GCAA and been helping the Multifamily Industry for the 28 or so years since.
What advice do you have for someone just starting in your field:
Becoming a great lawyer is an exercise in remembering that your primary job is as a problem-solver, but that's not a class they teach in law school - you have to learn that one every day with "on-the-job-training". And the best advice I have for anyone was given to me by my first boss, Lloyd: The only advertising a lawyer really needs to do is to do excellent work for the clients you have now, and let THEM tell other people about the great service you provided them.
