2026 DEI Scholarship Recipients

AANC News,

Rita Khan and Sammy Neighbors are the two recipients of the 2026 AANC Diversity Equity Inclusion Scholarship. The scholarship was established as an opportunity for multifamily housing industry professionals from historically underrepresented populations to participate in education and networking opportunities at the annual AANC Education & Legislative Conference.

Rita Khan is a first generation Bengali American who understands "the importance of representation, cultural respect, and equitable access to opportunity." Regarding DEI and her own professional development, Rita shares:

In my roles, I work with individuals who come from many different cultural, economic, and demographic backgrounds. Because housing is a foundational social determinant of health and well-being, I believe strongly in creating environments where people feel respected and supported. DEI keeps me attentive to disparities in access, representation, and opportunity, and it also helps me advocate for fair practices in leasing, resident relations, team development, and vendor engagement.

Professionally, DEI drives my commitment to inclusive leadership and to building systems that are both equitable and transparent. I focus on creating processes that uplift diverse voices, reduce barriers, and promote fairness within communities and organizations. DEI has become a foundation for my growth, influencing how I design programs, mentor others, and support teams in achieving shared goals."

Sammy Neighbors is an LGBTQIA+ professional who believes that DEI isn't just a workplace initiative or value; "it's the framework that ensures people like me - and the people I serve - have a fair chance to succeed, belong, and thrive." Regarding DEI and his own professional development, Sammy shares:

"DEI has shaped my professional development by giving me access to mentors, networks, and opportunities that may not have existed otherwise. Inclusive environments intentionally cultivate leaders with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, and that encourages me to continue advancing in my career with pride rather than hesitation.

Most importantly, DEI drives how I lead. Growing up LGBTQIA+ has taught me empathy, resilience, and an ability to understand perspectives different from my own — qualities that directly impact how I manage teams, support residents, and build community. It’s also why I advocate for fair housing, representation in leadership, and inclusive practices across the properties and teams I touch."

Both 2026 Scholarship Recipients will receive paid entry to the 2026 CONNECTed Conference in Raleigh (May 11-13), lodging, and a $100 stipend.

Congratulations to Rita and Sammy!
