Tell us about your career:
I was working for Nordstrom for 12 years when I was approached by one of my customers; He said “Whitney, you would amazing in leasing.” I said, “sure! I would love a career change and would love to get into the apartment industry!” Luck just so had it that I interviewed and got a leasing job for a brand new lease-up in Northlake! I kept learning and growing and perfecting my craft, learning from others, and learning from the next direct report. I got to experience a multitude of properties, ranging from garden style, mid-rise, and even high rise. I eventually got promoted to Assistant Manager and was only in that role for 8 months, until I was promoted to Property Manager. I have been a Property Manager for 3 years now and I am currently managing a Lease-Up in LoSo!
When I took this step into this industry, I never looked back. I always knew I wanted to do something that made a real difference with the people that I served and the people I worked with. It has been an absolute whirlwind of a career and I am surrounded by such wonderful mentors and leaders that help me become a better manager and leader each day.
What advice do you have for someone just starting in your field:
100%, the hard times you endure in this industry are the ones that make you stronger. One day, you will thank those hard times because of how they molded you into the person that you are today. Don’t let the hard times break you. Fight through it.
Anything else you would like to share:
I truly care more about my team in everything they do, before myself. Check on them often, make them smile, make them laugh, dance in the leasing office with them, fight through the tough times with them. The team, is everything.
