What advice do you have for someone just starting in your field:

Be the leader you've always desired for yourself, no matter your role. Being a leader is not always glorious or easy. Being a leader sometimes means longer hours, harsher conversations, and tougher decisions. To me, being a leader is about being the person that you would want to follow. You don’t listen to their direction or take their advice out of seniority or because ‘it’s my boss, I have to’.

You listen because you believe in them, and you trust them. You aspire to lead the way that they lead, and you strive to meet the standards that they’ve set for you. When you think of them, you’re not flooded with feelings of stress, anxiety, or intimidation, but of support and knowledge. You know that as long as you’re doing your best, that they have your back. They inspire you to reach your full potential and they remind you of this potential on your harder days. They keep you accountable with areas of opportunity and they celebrate your successes. You strive to make them proud in your position, not because it makes you look good, but because of how it makes you feel.

I have been very grateful that the examples of leadership I have had, have been exceptional people to learn from and I have always challenged myself to grow to match them.
