Tell us about your career:
I began my career in Property Management very much like many others, never anticipating or looking for it! I started in 1994, just a couple of years out of college, as a leasing consultant, back when we typed leases on triplicate forms...using a typewriter. I quickly determined this was "my lane" and worked with determination to learn and absorb all I could. This allowed me to quickly accelerate myself to other positions both on site and then within the corporate environment.
With each role, came new challenges which only increased my love of this industry. I will say that my involvement with TAA and each local association chapter when I lived or had properties outside of Raleigh, offered me the opportunity to enhance not only my skills professionally but also personally, as the individuals I have met along the way have both enriched and added to my experiences. I turned my focus from operations to business development about three years ago and continue to grow in this glorious and exciting profession. It is truly rewarding, in every way, to those who are willing and determined to seek out its numerous possibilities.
What advice do you have for someone just starting in your field:
Learn all you can! Ask, explore, read, attend events, and definitely get engaged with the apartment association in your area. This will open so many opportunities for you to learn, network, and grow.
Anything else you would like to share:
Even after 30 years, I wake up every morning excited for the day and the adventures it will bring. I have had several opportunities over the years to change course, but I have never regretted sticking to the one I began back in 1994.
