AANC Board Spotlight | Amy Timocko
AANC Board member Amy Timocko was born in Cheverly, Maryland. When she was in fifth grade, Amy knocked over her mother’s ironing board and suffered severe burns on her arm. Her parents took her to the emergency room for treatment and, unfortunately, Amy not only left the hospital with tender skin and a sore arm, but she also left with measles. She was quarantined at home, in the dark, for a month, with CDC warnings posted about the house.
Amy’s early experience dealing with a communicable disease may have been the inspiration that led her to major in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. While studying at Virginia Tech, she fell for a boy and interrupted her education to follow him to North Carolina. Ultimately, the relationship didn’t last, but by that time, Amy had fallen in love with the Old North State and has lived in North Carolina ever since.
In 2000, Amy finished her degree at UNC Wilmington. After graduation, she moved to Raleigh and began selling chemicals for Dow Reichhold. A friend, seeing that Amy was unhappy in her position, encouraged her to explore property management. In 2001, Amy took a leap of faith and accepted a position with Fairfield Residential as a leasing consultant at Westover Hills Apartments.
With guidance and support from exceptional mentors, Amy quickly advanced in her career. When Westover Hills was sold to Executive Affiliates, she became the property manager. In 2003, Amy left Westover Hills to become the Community Manager for Bell Partners, where she was soon promoted to Area Manager and then Regional Manager. Then, in early 2009, Amy left Bell Partners to join Hawthorne Residential as a Regional Manager. Through hard work and dedication, she was promoted to Senior Regional Manager, then Regional Vice President, and finally Senior Regional Vice President.
Amy stayed with Hawthorne Residential for 15 years, taking a well-deserved break in early 2024. In late March of the same year, she joined Caviness & Cates, where she continues to serve as Director of Asset Management.
During the early years of her career, Amy was introduced to the Triangle Apartment Association (TAA). Because of her interest in giving back to others in the multifamily industry, Amy has served two terms on the TAA Board and has been a member of the TAA Government Affairs Committee for the last 10 years. In addition to serving on the TAA Board, Amy currently serves on the AANC Board of Directors and two AANC committees, Governance and Government Affairs.
Amy currently lives in Fuquay-Varina in the house she and her husband, Mike, built together as their family grew. Amy and Mike have been married for 22 years and have three children, Kiley (16), Michael Jr. (13), and Nolan (8). They also have a dog named Obi and three cats: Mr. Kitty III, Baby Yoda, and Ewok. When not wrangling children or pets, Amy loves going to the beach, traveling, reading, baking, and “trying not to kill (her) plant children.”
From an unexpected move to North Carolina to a decades-long career in multifamily, Amy’s story is a testament to the value of taking chances and embracing change. Fueled by leadership, dedication, and service, Amy supports others and advocates for the industry, serving as inspiration to others to take chances along the way.
