As a Multi-Family Property Manager, I truly enjoy creating an environment where my team feels supported and empowered to deliver exceptional customer service to our residents. What advice do you have for someone just starting in your field:
Starting in property management can be fast-paced and a bit overwhelming—but if you focus on a few key fundamentals early on, you’ll quickly set yourself apart.
Understand that this industry is truly about people, not just the property. Building strong relationships with residents, your team, and vendors is essential to long-term success.
Know your lease and community policies inside and out. This knowledge gives you confidence, ensures consistency, and helps you navigate challenges effectively.
Don’t underestimate the value of maintenance knowledge. While you don’t need to be an expert, understanding the basics will help you make informed decisions and communicate more effectively with both residents and vendors.
Learn how to handle difficult conversations with a solution-focused mindset. Stay professional, remain calm, and avoid taking things personally—it’s a key part of the role.
Invest in your team. A strong leasing consultant and a reliable maintenance supervisor can make or break your success. Support them, communicate openly, and take time to recognize their contributions.
Finally, take care of yourself. Property management can easily blur the lines between work and personal life. Set boundaries when possible, and avoid burnout by not trying to solve everything all at once.
