Leadership, Belonging, and Pride Month
As we recognize Pride Month this June, it presents an opportunity to reflect on what leadership truly looks like in our industry.
In his article, "What Leadership Looks Like: A Message for DEI Strategy in Housing," housing leader Jeffrey Promnitz challenges organizations to move beyond viewing diversity, equity, and inclusion as a program or initiative and instead view it as a leadership responsibility. He argues that effective leaders create environments where people feel seen, heard, respected, and valued—not because of a policy, but because it is the right thing to do.
One of the article's key themes is belonging. While diversity may bring people to the table, belonging determines whether they feel comfortable enough to contribute their ideas, talents, and perspectives. Leadership is not simply about who is represented; it is about creating cultures where people know they matter.
This message resonates strongly during Pride Month. Pride is often associated with celebration, but at its core, it is about visibility, dignity, and belonging. For LGBTQIA+ individuals in our workplaces and communities, the ability to show up authentically and be respected is an important part of creating environments where everyone can thrive.
In multifamily housing, we serve residents and work alongside team members from a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences, and identities. As leaders, our role is not necessarily to have all the answers, but to ensure that every person is treated with fairness, respect, and professionalism.
The article reminds us that leadership is demonstrated in everyday actions: listening to others, seeking different perspectives, creating opportunities for growth, and fostering environments where people feel they belong.
As we celebrate Pride Month, perhaps the question for each of us is not "What does DEI look like?" but rather, "What does leadership look like?" If leadership is about bringing out the best in people, then creating spaces of belonging is not just a DEI goal—it is a leadership responsibility.
Discussion Question:
What is one thing we can do as leaders to help employees and residents feel a greater sense of belonging in our communities?
